This is horrible. Rich people will always take advantage of people who can't afford to turn down the dangerous work that they don't want to do themselves.

"People are Dropping Dead" from BP Dispersants: Toxicologist: The most controversial—and damaging—legacy the BP spill may leave may not be the oil-wracked shores around the Gulf of Mexico or the tragic deaths of 11 workers who were on the Deepwater Horizon rig when it exploded. It may turn out to be the still under-reported use of chemical dispersants to break up the oil slick. An estimated 1.9 million gallons of the largely untested chemical cocktail Corexit were dumped on the Gulf — and now, droves of local residents are being afflicted by respiratory sickness, and worse. According to a toxicologist and marine biologist in the area, people are already dying from exposure to the toxic chemical.

The dispersants used … contain solvents such as petroleum distillates and 2-butoxyethanol," Dr. Riki Ott, a toxicologist, marine biologist, and Exxon Valdez survivor told Al Jazeera. "Solvents dissolve oil, grease, and rubber," she continued. "Given this evidence, it should be no surprise that solvents are also notoriously toxic to people, something the medical community has long known," Dr. Ott added."People are already dying from this… I'm dealing with three autopsies right now. I don't think we'll have to wait years to see the effects like we did in Alaska, people are dropping dead now. I know two people who are down to 4.75 per cent of their lung capacity, their heart has enlarged to make up for that, and their esophagus is disintegrating, and one of them is a 16-year-old boy who went swimming in the Gulf."
The Al Jazeera report runs through a terrifying list of people who are already suffering respiratory ailments, experiencing severe diarrhea, and major sinus problems. It's scary stuff, and you really should read the whole thing. Health experts cited say the impacts of exposure include "headaches, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pains, chest pains, respiratory system damage, skin sensitization, hypertension, central nervous system depression, neurotoxic effects, genetic mutations, cardiac arrhythmia, and cardiovascular damage."There have also been reports of skin rashes and nasty blistering from people who've waded in water hit by dispersed oil, like this woman, who was afflicted after wading in Mobile Bay, Alabama.
The report surveys a wide range of Gulf residents and local and national health experts, and it paints an increasingly grim picture for not only human health in the region, but ecological health as well. Hugh Kaufman, an EPA whistleblower and analyst, tells Al Jazeera that: "We have dolphins that are hemorrhaging. People who work near it are hemorrhaging internally. And that's what dispersants are supposed to do … And, for example, in the Exxon Valdez case, people who worked with dispersants, most of them are dead now."
And BP is still dumping dispersants, and more and more dispersed oil continues to wash ashore every day. Yesterday, I reported that the Obama administration didn't know the impacts of using chemical dispersants in the Gulf before it OK'd them — if conditions continue to worsen in the Gulf, that lack of knowledge could be viewed as potentially fatal negligence.

Some of the chemicals that were distributed along with the dispersants, such as xylene and benzene, are well known carcinogens that are also sometimes used to make napalm and bombs. They dumped millions of gallons of the dispersant and the EPA won't even allow over 1% of benzene to be in U.S. gasoline - while scientists have been finding incredibly substantial amounts in the oil plumes.

News recently emerged from the Gulf Coast that BP is burning endangered sea turtles alive.1That's right. BP is using "controlled burns" to contain the oil spill, and any turtles that are not removed from the area before the fire is lit are literally burned alive.
A boat captain who has been leading efforts to rescue the endangered turtles says BP has blocked his crews from entering the areas where the animals are trapped, effectively shutting down the rescue operation.
With BP already facing so much public outrage, we can stop this. Our friends at Credo Mobile launched a petition demanding that BP stop burning turtles alive, and you can add your name by clicking the link below:
The petition says: "BP: Stop blocking the rescue of endangered sea turtles before you burn them alive in your 'controlled burns.'"Then, after you've signed, be sure to share it with your friends on Facebook, Twitter, or by forwarding this email.
The way controlled burns work is that shrimp boats create a corral of oil by dragging together fire-resistant booms and then lighting the enclosed "burn box" on fire. Any animals not removed from the burn area are trapped.
The sea turtle most affected by the Gulf of Mexico oil spill is the Kemp's Ridley, which is listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act.2
"They ran us out of there and then they shut us down. They would not let us get back in there," said turtle rescuer Mike Ellis in an interview with conservation biologist Catherine Craig that was posted on YouTube.3
Environmental groups including the Center for Biological Diversity and Turtle Island Restoration Network have called on BP to end the practice, but BP has refused, denying that there's really any problem. Yesterday, these groups filed a lawsuit demanding that BP take action to protect the endangered turtles.4 But the legal system can work very slowly, and the turtles need help now.

Adm. Thad Allen said Wednesday that an accident triggered the removal of a containment cap on the oil geyser. Officials are examining the cap to look for hydrate formation and hope to replace it on the gushing well.
Separately, Allen said two people related to the spill response have been killed, one in a swimming pool accident and another on a vessel conducting oil skimming. He had no further details of the deaths.

BP and the Obama administration have reached a preliminary agreement that the oil company will place $20 billion in an escrow account to be administered by Kenneth Feinberg, a White House official said. Feinberg also oversaw payments to families of victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The government's Flow Rate Technical Group estimates that the BP well is now leaking 35,000 to 60,000 barrels a day into the Gulf of Mexico, the Interior Department said in a statement. Last Thursday saw the release of three preliminary estimates of the flow from before the well's riser pipe was sheared, ranging from 12,600 to 50,000 barrels a day. Initial estimates of the flow were 5,000 barrels of oil a day.
BP is working to capture part of the oil flow, though containment efforts were halted earlier this afternoon due to a ship fire.

Local News Briefs: Oil Spill Training, Crumbling Structures in Armstrong Park, EPA Tells Us Something We Already Knew, Scary Hurricane Season Predicted
I've got to get back into the hang of doing this.
Audubon will start training volunteers to work for the Audubon Volunteer Response Center Monday, June 7th, for oil spill purposes on the Mississippi coast.
Good God, Armstrong Park is already fucked up and it (still) hasn't even opened yet.
The EPA has finally ruled that formaldehyde causes cancer. Funny how these types of admissions are always too late for the people who are suffering and dying. A couple of years ago when people started complaining about how their perfectly healthy 50-something year old mother started having nosebleeds and migraines, and their kid brother all of a sudden started having serious asthma attacks, and their wife had died within 2 months of being diagnosed with cancer, they were just being ridiculous, exaggerating a non-problem, making ignorant assumptions about something they knew nothing about.
I went to one of those FEMA formaldehyde meetings, which were basically meant to tell people that there was nothing to worry about, but the residents there were too smart to buy that. But no one will ever say that those people were right because most of them were poor, and many of them Black, and if you're poor and/or Black, you could claim that this city is hot as hell in the middle of August, and you'd still be wrong. I read a lot of this blog when people started to publicly complain about the trailers, there's a ton of information and testimonials there.
Hang on for the ride. *Sigh*. More specifically, 18 named storms and 10 hurricanes. This does not help with the bad feelings I'm having about this year's hurricane season. I need renter's insurance and a driver's license, stat.
I think I'm done depressing myself now. Until tomorrow!

Crews successfully cut oil pipe a mile below the sea and will attempt to cap it and pump crude oil to the surface in latest attempt to repair massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, a U.S. Coast Guard official says.
President Obama will return to the Gulf Coast again Friday to inspect the damage and response efforts.

SCHRIEVER, La. — Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen is saying that a saw has become stuck as it was cutting through a pipe on a busted well, stalling the latest attempt to contain the Gulf oil gusher.
Allen said Wednesday the goal is to free the saw and finish the cut later in the day. This is the second major cut in the effort to contain — not plug — the nation's worst spill.
Allen says the first cut with giant shears was successful overnight.
The best chance at plugging the leak involves a relief well that is at least two months from completion.

The federal government has launched a criminal probe into the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said Tuesday.
Federal agencies, including the FBI, are participating in the probe, Holder told reporters after meeting with state and federal prosecutors in New Orleans. "If we find evidence of illegal behavior, we will be forceful in our response," he said.
