News Briefs: Franken Amendment, ACoE Lies Again, OPP Unconstitutional

It's sad that amendments like this even need to be passed, but I'm glad that Franken knew that this was important enough to make it a priority.

I'm real late on this, but how much more of this bullshit are New Orleanians going to have to take from the Army Corps of Engineers?  It's like they're trying to kill everyone here.

Conditions are unconstitutional in the OPP.  Color me shocked.  The sheriff tries to use the Katrina excuse, but really, I wouldn't be surprised if conditions were unconstitutional before Katrina.

I've thought about this more and more often.  What caused us to be so selfish as a country?

News Briefs: Crumbling Levees in Algiers, True Blood Beverage, Free Amazon Downloads, Racism in Schools, Police Monitor Resigns, Trailer Trials Begin

The levee in Algiers is crumbling, but the Army Corps of Engineers is saying that this is totally not a problem.

B-positive for me, please.

Free music!!!!!!!  Get it while you can!

NOLA Film Fest Line-up.  They're showing Precious!  Can't wait, and I'll actually have money this year.

How should teachers discuss racist attitudes towards each other and students?

I didn't even know about this, and already this dude's resigning.

First FEMA trailer trial is about to begin.

I think most of these links came from New Orleans Ladder.  I keep forgetting to note where this info comes from, if it's not something I discovered myself.  That's what happens when you leave a hundred tabs open for several days in Firefox, you end up with no idea where any of it came from.

News Briefs: Greenway Closer, Bad Pumps, Babies Discriminate Too, Bad Plastics, Delgado Fitness, Free Yoga

Via b.rox, I'm happy find out that the proposed Lafitte Greenway is very close to being a done deal.

More and even more about our non-working flood pumps.

Even babies as young as 6 months old discriminate. When will people stop making claims about "colorblindness" and how many Black friends they have? We live in a racist society. It doesn't matter how many nice things you say about your Black neighbor in front of little Johnny, he lives in a country that brainwashes it's populace with images of "evil" Black men and women every day. There's no one person or place that's influencing kids, and avoiding an open discussion of race with them will just allow them to grow up with these thoughts. Parents need to work to dismantle racist thoughts; if you only work to prevent them, you're doomed to fail. I grew up with a generation of white kids who think that they're colorblind. And let's just say, they were mistaken. No one is. And really, no one should be. People of color don't want their color ignored, we just don't want it to affect our lives in negative ways the way it tends to now.

This is an easy article about which plastic containers are safe to use, and which aren't.
How Safe is Your Plastic Container?
We have all seen the recycling emblem on the bottom of a plastic bottle, but what do the numbers inside the arrows mean? You may be surprised to find out what potential poison is containing your food or even your child's food.

Hmmm, Delgado Community College offers a 4 month membership to their fitness center for only $60. I think I may have to join...

Also, free yoga here.

News Briefs: The Perfect Mayor, Blame the Levee Boards?

Clifton Harris, of Cliff's Crib wrote this article for the Gambit about what kind of mayor this city needs.

Jarvis DeBerry weighs the question of how much the corrupt New Orleans levee boards are to blame for the flooding after Katrina.

From New Orleans - It's Just Me: The First Step to Recovery...

I thought that this was an interesting piece. While I don't completely agree with his conclusions, he provides a lot of information about past issues with the levee system, and the comment section is informative, as well (I tend to agree more with New Orleans Ladder). I think that the blame for the flooding of New Orleans still lies mostly with the Army Corps of Engineers. Hindsight is always 20/20 and it's easy to look down on the rich people who wanted their tennis courts and the poor people who weren't educated enough to do research outside of what their insurance companies told them, but people never expect that the worst thing imaginable will happen to them. They trusted the government to build levees to protect them, and if they were going to half-ass it due to a little complaining from the entitled or the ignorant, they should be fired...oh wait, we can't do that.

News Briefs: Army Corps, Optimistic Hurricane Season?, Charity Hospital Preferred, FBI Seizes NOPD Files, Lower Pot Penalties

Corps won't make the June 2011 deadline. Really? I'm shocked. It took them forever to start and they hit nothing but bumps along the way, so I don't know why this is news. Also, inspectors have found problems with the 17th Street Canal pumps. It's sad that if the Army Corps of Engineers was a private company contracted to do this work, we could simply fire them and replace them with people who are competent. But no, they are a federal agency so we're just supposed to put up with the fact that they are responsible for the deaths of thousands of people, and from the looks of it, will be responsible for the deaths of thousands more in the coming years.

Yay? *Runs to find wood to knock on*

Most polled would prefer to renovate Charity Hospital than build this new multi-million dollar facility.

Good. Hopefully something will come of both of these investigations.

District Attorney Cannizzaro has suggested sending cases of simple pot possession to municipal court instead of criminal courts. I guess this is the closest that we'll get to decriminalization right now. I had a friend spend two days in jail over a nickel bag of weed (and he was only stopped because he was white walking in a Black neighborhood). Of course, after all of the money spent bailing him out, his case was dropped because the judge had the common sense to see how pointless it would be to pursue anything further.

News Briefs: Army Corps Gets Spanked (and Not in a Fun Way), New Recycling Company

You'd think that Katrina would have been a lesson learned for the Army Corps of Engineers, but no. At least someone is calling them out for it.

This excites me greatly. Of course, this article doesn't actually include information on how to sign up, but Google loves me so here it is.

ETA: This wonderful analysis by oyster at Your Right Hand Thief sums up the "mystery" of the magical disappearing Nagin emails.
